The United States has named the third Horn of Africa special envoy in less than two years, the State Department has announced.

According to Anthony Blanc, they have appointed Ambassador Mike Hammer as their Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa.

Ambassador David Satterfield, who has served as Special Envoy for the past five months, is reportedly preparing to take over.

He said the appointment of Hammer Hammer, a new ambassador to the United States, was a signal of the United States' commitment to the region.

"Supporting a comprehensive political process that will lead to peace, common security and prosperity for all Ethiopians is a priority," Blakin said.

The new Horn of Africa Special Envoy, Mike Hammer, has served as US Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Chile, and has held various positions at the State Department and the White House.

In less than two years, the United States' efforts to send Chris, a member of the first legislature, a few months after the outbreak of war in northern Ethiopia, were welcomed by three ambassadors.

Who were the special envoys of the Horn of Africa at this time? What did they do?

Senator Chris Cuns

In the first few months after the war in Tigray, President Joe Biden, who was concerned about the humanitarian crisis and the crisis in the Horn of Africa, was sent by Sen. Chris Cuns.

March 2013 Delaware State Lawyer and Politician Christopher Andrew Cuns, who was sent to the United States as a US envoy, was a longtime member of the U.S. Legislature and was one of the candidates for the presidency.

Kuns took over the presidency until he was nominated by the President for the Horn of Africa Special Envoy.

During his first visit to Ethiopia, Kuns discussed the crisis in the Tigray region, human rights abuses and the border dispute between Sudan and Ethiopia, as well as meeting with African Union officials.

Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman

Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman

At the end of April last year, the United States appointed Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman as its Special Envoy to Ethiopia and the surrounding countries, replacing Chris Kuns, who had served as President Biden's short-lived envoy to the Horn of Africa.

At the time, Feltman was the Horn of Africa's special envoy, and the State Department indicated that he would pay special attention to the situation in and around Ethiopia.

Accordingly, the mission will focus on the war in northern Ethiopia, the volatile situation in the country, the border dispute with Sudan, and the Great Renaissance Dam.

Jeffrey Feltman, a senior official at the State Department and at the United Nations, has extensive experience in Africa and the Middle East.

In addition, Feltman is said to have helped bring peace to the Horn of Africa through his experience in implementing US-related strategy in multilateral diplomacy, as well as in negotiations on various environmental issues.

Feltman, who has been the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa for nine months, has traveled extensively to the Horn of Africa and the Middle East to resolve the conflict, particularly in northern Ethiopia.

Earlier in the day, Ambassador Feltman said in Washington that he had met with senior Ethiopian officials, including Prime Minister Abe, and representatives of the TPLF in Nairobi, Kenya.

However, Feltman, despite his efforts, did not succeed in persuading the participants in the Tigray war to sit down and talk.

He was replaced by Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman as the Special Envoy of the Horn of Africa, and David Gumterfeld, another US diplomat.

In January, David Satterfield, the US Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, is said to have more than four decades of experience in Middle East diplomacy.

Earlier in the day, Sutterfield traveled to Addis Ababa, Khartoum and Riyadh with Molly Fi, the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.

Afterwards, the Special Envoy, Ambassador David Satterfield, arrived in Ethiopia for two days to hold talks with Ethiopian government officials, UN officials, and representatives of humanitarian organizations.

According to the State Department, Ambassador David Satterfield, who has been the US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa for five months, will hand over his position to Ambassador Mike Hammer without any success in his mission.

American effort

The United States has been in contact with Ethiopian officials to appoint a special envoy to end the war.

A few months ago, Ambassador Stterfield, who had been appointed Special Envoy of the United States to replace Ambassador Feltman, was soon announced to be replaced by Ambassador Mike Hammer.

Five months later, two years after the outbreak of the war in northern Ethiopia, relations with the Ethiopian government have deteriorated due to US position and actions.

A few months after the outbreak of the war, Gumtu diplomats appointed by the United States as Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa were expected to help resolve the conflict in the Horn of Africa, particularly in Ethiopia, and the political crisis in Sudan.

Fighting in northern Ethiopia continues until December, but there are fears that another round of fighting could break out.

In Sudan, the political crisis has intensified since a military coup overthrew the government.

The new US Special Envoy will play a key role in bringing an end to the war and political crisis in the Horn of Africa.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
